Kyoto Tango Railway (WILLER TRAINS) and Kitakinki Tango Railway will introduce new rolling stock into the “Tango no Umi” formation for limited express trains, planning to introduce four formations of eight cars, one every two years starting in fiscal 2028.
Tango no Umi” is the nickname for the KTR 8000 diesel trains currently in operation on the “Hashidate” and “Maizuru” limited express trains. This time, the trains will be replaced with a new model based on JR West’s Kiha 189 series used for the “Hamakaze” express and other services. The renewal will be subsidized by Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures, as well as Maizuru City, Miyazu City, and other municipalities along the line.
The new car was designed by Eiji Mitooka, who also designed the current “Tango no Umi” (Sea of Tango), and is named the “Matsu” series. The exterior of the new train will be indigo blue with a metallic finish and a gold symbol.
The interior of the train will continue the concept familiar to Mr. Mitooka, with extensive use of wood for floors, seats, etc. On the other hand, the seating configuration will be significantly changed from the current model.
