The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire on February 26 in Abidjan for the “Road Maintenance and Management Equipment Improvement Project in the Greater Abidjan Area”. The G/A was signed by Mr. Adama Koulibaly, Minister of Economy, Finance and Budget of Cote d’Ivoire, and Mr. Motoharu Wakabayashi, Director of JICA Cote d’Ivoire Office.
Signing Ceremony
The Greater Abidjan Area (a metropolitan area with a population of approximately 6 million that includes the city of Abidjan and surrounding areas) is not only the largest commercial metropolitan area in Abidjan, but also a hub for transit cargo to neighboring landlocked countries. The region faces the challenge of developing and maintaining road infrastructure to cope with rapid population growth and increased traffic demand, and Japan has been supporting the development of the region’s transportation infrastructure, starting with assistance in the preparation of an urban transportation master plan.
This project will support the country to maintain and manage its roads on its own, thereby improving road conditions and transportation convenience, which will in turn contribute to smoother transportation and logistics to the region and neighboring countries. In addition, the improvement of road conditions and transportation convenience will encourage Japanese companies to advance into the region, and the equipment and materials provided are expected to increase Japan’s presence in the region through the widespread recognition of Japanese technologies and products.
