From the JR Mine Line, where replacement buses are running, I took the e-Palette “Mine Gurutto” on a day trip to Akiyoshidai. A trip to the Yamaguchi DC where I also fully enjoyed Nagato Yumoto Onsen.

The JR Group and the Welcome to Yamaguchi Tourism Campaign Promotion Council are hosting the “Yamaguchi Destination Campaign,” titled “A Journey of Blessings: Welcome to Yamaguchi, the Land of Blessings,” from October through December. A destination campaign is an initiative in which the JR Group, local governments, local tourism stakeholders, and travel agencies work together to offer special travel deals, point campaigns, and limited-time promotions during the campaign period. Prior to the campaign’s launch, JR West organized a tour visiting Kintaikyo Bridge and Akiyoshidai. Following Part 1, which covered the area around Kintaikyo Bridge and Ruriko-ji Temple, Part 2 will explore the Akiyoshidai area.

“Akiyoshido,” home to an impressive, vast limestone cave: If you continue down the narrow path lined with shops, you’ll reach the entrance to Akiyoshido. Designated as a Special Natural Monument, Akiyoshido is a massive limestone cave located 100 meters underground within Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park. The tourist walking trail is about 1 km long (total length: 11.2 km). Since the path is uneven and often wet, it’s best to wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking. While not all areas are accessible, the cave is partially accessible to wheelchair users (wheelchairs are available for free rental). There is an elevator partway through the cave that leads out to the Akiyoshidai Plateau. You should plan on spending about an hour on the tour. The admission fee for adults (high school students and older) is 1,600 yen, but this is included in the “Yamaguchi Fuku no Kuni Tour Pass” (5,000 yen for adults), which is sold exclusively through “tabiwa by WESTER,” as explained in Part 1.
