The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mizuno Corporation, and Itochu Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding to support the development of Ethiopia’s garment industry.
Ethiopia is one of Africa’s largest countries, with a population of over 100 million, and is home to many young people. The Ethiopian government is focusing its efforts on developing the garment industry as a sector that will lead to future economic growth and job creation.
However, there are still many challenges to overcome—such as quality control, production processes, and improving the skills of frontline workers—in order to create products that are recognized worldwide. Therefore, JICA, Mizuno, and Itochu Corporation are collaborating on this initiative to leverage Japan’s experience and expertise in manufacturing to support the growth of Ethiopian companies and the development of their workforce.
Specifically, using DEMKA in Ethiopia as a model factory, Mizuno will share the quality control and sewing technology expertise it has cultivated over many years directly on-site. In addition, Itochu Corporation will provide advice on matters such as the procurement of fabrics necessary for producing higher-quality products. JICA will support and coordinate these efforts while disseminating the results and lessons learned to other garment manufacturers.
Through this initiative,
– To develop engineers and managers who can excel in the field
– Promote the production of products of world-class quality
– Increase job opportunities, particularly for young people
– Contribute to the overall development of Ethiopia’s garment industry
We aim to do this. By widely sharing the results and experiences gained at the model factory, we hope to provide an opportunity for more companies to grow.
Furthermore, this initiative is not intended solely for development cooperation. Ethiopia has a pool of young talent and significant growth potential, while Japanese companies possess advanced technologies in quality control and production management. By collaborating to leverage each other’s strengths, we aim to contribute to Ethiopia’s industrial development and, in the future, foster new business partnerships and cooperative relationships between Japanese and Ethiopian companies.
JICA, Mizuno, and Itochu Corporation aim to support the creation of an environment where the people of Ethiopia can gain access to better jobs and skills, while also working to establish a long-term partnership through which Japan and Ethiopia can learn from and grow together.
■Key Aspects of the Partnership
– Improving Quality and Productivity in Ethiopia’s Garment Industry with the Goal of Meeting International Market Standards
– Technical training for sewing technicians and production managers using DEMKA Ethiopia’s model line
– Activities Related to Industrial Promotion and Human Resource Development
