JR East will begin rolling out “teppay,” a new code-based payment service available through the Mobile Suica app, starting at 11:00 a.m. on October 20.
In addition to making purchases that exceed the previous limit (20,000 yen) and buying tickets and commuter passes, the “Value” balance in teppay can be transferred between users—such as family and friends—for situations like splitting bills or giving allowance. By verifying your identity using your My Number Card, you can use up to 300,000 yen from your teppay balance, or up to your card’s credit limit when linked to a View Card.
Code payments are accepted at more than 1.7 million locations nationwide displaying the Smart Code logo. They can be used at shopping centers located inside train stations—such as Lumine and Atre—as well as at convenience stores like Newdays, hotels, department stores, and electronics retailers. “teppay Points” are awarded based on the payment amount, and these points can be exchanged for JRE POINTS.
In addition to being able to issue a “teppay JCB Prepaid Card” within the app—which allows users to spend their teppay balance on online shopping—the company also plans to expand the service to include “Region-Specific Value (Baritike),” which can be used for municipal premium gift certificates and cashless rebate programs.
In addition, the service is scheduled to launch on Mobile PASMO starting in the spring of 2027. teppay users will be able to “send and receive” payments across Mobile Suica and Mobile PASMO apps.
