However, Blue Trains have never operated on either the Kumamoto Railway or its predecessor, the JNR Yumae Line. Despite this, why is this passenger car located in Taragi Town, more than 80 km away from Kumamoto Station?
It’s not just “Fuji Hayabusa”!
The three passenger cars used for the “Blue Train Taragi” were originally part of a sleeper express that ran between Tokyo and various destinations in Kyushu; they have been partially remodeled and are now used as lodging facilities. How do guests spend their time and enjoy their stay? Let’s take a peek.
Car No. 2, Ohane 15-6, Common Area: During its active service, this car was stationed at various depots—including Hayaki, Mukōmachi, Kumamoto, and Nagasaki—and was coupled to sleeper trains bound for Kyushu, such as the “Akatsuki,” “Sakura,” and “Fuji.” After being taken out of service, the original bunk beds were removed, and the car is now used by Blue Train Taragi as a front desk for check-in and a common area. There are convenience stores like FamilyMart nearby, and if you have a car or motorcycle, there are several supermarkets within driving distance. Since meals are not provided, it’s a good idea to buy food in advance and bring it in to eat in this space.
