“Tourism EXPO Japan 2026,” one of the world’s largest travel events, is being held at Tokyo Big Sight for four days, from September 24 to 27.
Mexico is exhibiting in the Latin America and Caribbean section of East Hall 1 under the title “MEXICO.” They’ve also set up a very flashy photo booth.
Inside the booth, there is a man wearing traditional attire called “chalo”—which symbolizes Mexico’s equestrian culture—and sporting skull makeup, as well as a female masked professional wrestler; if you speak to them, they’ll happily pose for a commemorative photo with you. Skull makeup is often worn in combination with the “chalo” costume during the traditional “Day of the Dead” celebrations, when people dress up and parade through the streets.
In addition, they say they will be giving away axolotl plush toys to those who follow them on social media. The axolotl is an endemic species found in certain regions of Mexico. Its official name is the Mexican salamander.
