On August 26, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) reached an agreement with the Government of Indonesia in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, on the implementation framework for the technical cooperation project titled “Project to Improve Public Transportation in Municipalities Surrounding Jakarta,” and signed the Record of Discussions (R/D). The signing ceremony took place between Muhammad Risal Wasal, Director General of the Directorate General of Integrated Transportation and Multimodal Transport at the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation, and Sachiko Takeda, Director of the JICA Indonesia Office.

This project aims to support the Directorate General of Integrated Transportation and Multimodal Transport of the Ministry of Transportation and related agencies in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area—where severe traffic congestion has become a major challenge due to population growth and the expansion of the metropolitan area—by strengthening their capacity to plan and coordinate public transportation systems and transportation hubs, as well as their ability to develop financing schemes. Specifically, the project will develop feeder transportation plans and transportation hub development plans in pilot areas, establish coordination mechanisms among relevant agencies, and create a handbook on implementation methods and business models. This will improve the connectivity of the public transportation network—including the MRT (Metro Rapid Transit)—and promote its use, thereby helping to alleviate traffic congestion in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area and realize sustainable urban transportation. Furthermore, by improving regional connectivity, the project is expected to support Indonesia’s sustainable development, while also contributing to the strengthening of Japan-Indonesia relations and regional stability.
