New Japan Sea Ferry will launch its new large car ferry, the “Hamanasu,” on September 1.
Construction is underway at the Eura Plant of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Shimonoseki Shipyard, with completion and delivery scheduled for August 27. The vessel will replace the existing “Akashia” and will begin service on September 1 on the route from Otaru to Maizuru.
The Hamanasu has a total length of 199.0 meters, a gross tonnage of approximately 14,300 metric tons, four main engines each producing 8,540 kW, and a speed of 28.3 knots. It has a passenger capacity of 286 and can carry approximately 50 trucks and 30 passenger cars.
Like the “Keyaki,” which is already in service, this vessel incorporates state-of-the-art energy-efficient hull designs, including a batten-flow stern with a ducktail and a vertical bow. In addition, a roll-reduction system combining anti-rolling tanks—which prevent the hull from rolling—with fin stabilizers minimizes propulsion resistance, reportedly achieving a 5% improvement in energy efficiency compared to conventional vessels.
The ship’s interior is designed around the theme of Hokkaido’s natural beauty, featuring a three-story atrium entrance, a two-story atrium forward salon, and transparent elevators—all designed to create a sense of openness. The top deck features an open-air bath and sauna, as well as the “Kamui” screening room, where guests can enjoy a variety of content.
