From Special Overseas Trips to Casual Destinations Similar to Domestic Travel: When asked about the frequency of trips to South Korea, 28.3% said they visit at least twice a year. The repeat visitor rate is particularly high among people in their 30s (38.0%) and women in their 40s (36.0%), with approximately one in three falling into these categories. Furthermore, when asked how they perceive travel to South Korea, 72.8% view it as a casual, easy-to-visit destination. The most common reason for choosing South Korea as a travel destination was “it’s close to Japan” (62.8%), followed by “the food is appealing” (51.3%), “you can enjoy it even on a short break” (39.5%), “It offers a casual taste of overseas travel” (36.5%), and “There is no time difference” (35.3%). The ability to arrive in just a few hours with no time difference, allowing travelers to make the most of even limited vacation time, is a major reason for the popularity of travel to South Korea. Regarding length of stay, “2 nights and 3 days” was the most common choice at 54.0%, and short trips of 2 nights and 3 days or less accounted for 67.3% of all trips. Regarding travel planning, 64.5% begin planning less than three months before departure, with younger generations showing a stronger tendency toward short-term planning—reaching 81.0% among those in their 20s and 74.0% among those in their 30s. Travel to South Korea has become a destination that feels more like a domestic trip—one that people can take casually whenever the mood strikes—rather than a trip requiring preparation for a long vacation. For the most recent trip to South Korea, 30.0% had a total budget of “50,000–70,000 yen,” 25.8% had a budget of “70,000–100,000 yen,” and “50,000–100,000 yen” accounted for 55.8% of the total, representing the majority. On the other hand, 31.0% of those in their 40s and 34.0% of those in their 50s responded that their budget was “100,000 yen or more,” with both groups exceeding 30%; this suggests a tendency for people to allocate a larger budget for travel as they get older. When asked what they cut back on during their trip, “Nothing in particular” was the most common response at 34.5%. Among those in their 50s, this figure reached 48.0%, suggesting that as people get older, they prioritize satisfaction over saving money. While “airfare” (20.0%) and “hotels” (13.3%) ranked high, “beauty treatments” (5.3%), reflecting a growing trend toward prioritizing satisfaction by spending generously on local experiences they find valuable.

From solo trips to mother-daughter getaways, “diverse travel experiences that let you be yourself” are what make Korea so appealing. When asked about the purpose of their trips to Korea, “gourmet dining” topped the list at 70.8%, followed by “shopping” at 51.5% and “sightseeing” at 51.0%. Among women in their 30s, in addition to “shopping” (64.0%) and “visiting cafes” (52.0%), beauty-related activities—such as “purchasing cosmetics” (46.0%) and “beauty treatments and skincare” (42.0%)—accounted for a high percentage. Regarding travel companions for trips to South Korea, “friends” (49.5%) were the most common, followed by “traveling alone” (31.0%); 34.5% of respondents also expressed a desire to travel alone in the future. “Spouse” (30.5%) and “mother” (20.8%) also accounted for more than 20% each. Among women, 27.0% have traveled to South Korea with their mothers, and 25.5% responded that they “would like to travel with their mothers again in the future.” In particular, 42.0% of women in their 20s expressed a desire to travel with their mothers, indicating a high level of interest in mother-daughter trips. Additionally, 34.0% of women in their 50s have traveled to South Korea with their daughters, and 36.0% said they “would like to travel with their daughters in the future.” This reveals a two-way demand—with the younger generation wanting to travel with their mothers and the older generation wanting to travel with their daughters—and demonstrates that South Korea is gaining attention as a destination for mother-daughter trips that can be enjoyed across generations.
