Shinkansen “EX Ticket” to Go Digital Starting September 15; Paper Tickets to Be Phased Out in February 2027. Delays and Service Cancellations Can Also Be Checked via the App

Posted on August 10, 2026 by Editor in Chief

JR Central, JR West, and JR Kyushu will begin digitizing the paper “EX Ticket (Seat Assignment)” issued when passengers pass through automatic ticket gates as part of the “EX Service”—their Shinkansen online reservation and ticketless boarding system—starting September 15.

Going forward, a push notification will be sent to your smartphone the moment you pass through the Shinkansen’s automatic ticket gates, and the information will be displayed immediately. In addition, the digital “Seat Guide” displayed on the “EX App” on your smartphone on the day of travel will show not only the train you’re boarding and your seat number but also delay and service suspensions for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen (Tokyo–Hakata section)—information that was previously unavailable on paper—will be updated in real time. Starting in October, the platform number from which the train departs will also be displayed.

Please note that this feature is available exclusively through the “EX App” and cannot be accessed via a web browser on a PC or other device. As part of this transition to digital, the issuance of paper “EX Service Tickets” will end in February 2027.
