The Metropolitan Expressway Authority has released its traffic congestion forecast for the Obon period (August 8–16).
While noting that “traffic congestion tends to be relatively light,” authorities expect traffic jams to occur from the 8th to the 12th at the Aqua Line interchanges and certain exits.
In particular, traffic is expected on the Bay Area Expressway—starting with the “Kawasaki Ukishima JCT”—from around 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. due to shopping trips from Tokyo to the Kisarazu area, and at the “Kasai” exit from around 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. due to leisure traffic to destinations such as the Disney Resort; and traffic congestion is expected at the “Minato Mirai” exit from around 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. due to leisure traffic in the Yokohama Bay Area.
In addition, traffic congestion typically occurs daily along the Aqua Line and the Wangan Expressway; the predicted length of the traffic jam is 15 km, and the estimated travel time is up to 2 hours and 15 minutes. The company is urging travelers heading to Haneda Airport to also consider using the “Airport West Exit.”
