Whale Town Oshika is a tourist and community hub located on the Oshika Peninsula in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. The facility houses the tourist and local products center “Cottu,” the Oshika Peninsula Visitor Center, and “Oshika Whale Land,” where visitors can learn about whale ecology and the whaling culture of the Oshika Peninsula.
Inside the museum, visitors can see skeletal specimens of sperm whales—among the largest in Japan—and rare right whales. Outside, the whaling ship “No. 16 Toshimaru” is on display, and visitors can board it and go up to the deck.
By car, it takes about an hour from the Ishinomaki-Kanan Interchange on the Sanriku Expressway. By train, take the JR to Watanoha Station or Ishinomaki Station, transfer to a Miyako Bus, and get off at Ayukawa Port—the facility is right in front of you.
Even if you just enjoy the ocean on the Oshika Peninsula, see the giant whale skeleton at Oshika Whale Land, and board a whaling ship, it will be a wonderful experience. Plus, ferries depart from Ayukawa Port right in front of you for Kinkasan and Amijima, so it seems like a great place to plan a well-rounded trip.
