First, we stopped for a bite at a popular local hamburger steak chain. Since we’d just arrived and were starting to get a little hungry, we figured we might as well make the most of our trip to Shizuoka, so we decided to head to “Sawayaka Fujieda Tsukiji,” a restaurant famous for its charcoal-grilled hamburger steaks. Sawayaka is famous for its long wait times—at popular locations, the wait can be as long as seven hours—but at the Fujieda branch we visited this time, we were able to get in after waiting about 30 minutes. We checked in at 2:00 PM, well past lunchtime, yet we still had to wait that long. It really shows just how popular this place is. It had been a while since I’d had a Sawayaka hamburger steak—it’s made with 100% beef and is as tender as a steak! The aromatic scent of the charcoal grill and the fun of cooking it yourself on the hot plate—starting from rare and searing it to your preferred doneness—is part of the experience.
