JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing initiatives to revitalize local communities (currently known as the “JAL Hometown Project”), and In August 2020, the company launched the “JAL Hometown Ambassadors” program, in which flight attendants selected through an internal application process relocate to local communities to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, it also appointed the “JAL Hometown Support Team,” whose members engage in regional revitalization efforts while continuing to fly. The aim is to utilize the expertise cabin crew members have cultivated in their roles to develop products and address regional challenges in their hometowns or areas with which they have ties.
We spoke with Emi Fujita, a JAL Hometown Ambassador who is involved in promoting the charms of the San’in region.
――Please tell us about your efforts.
I’m Fujita, a JAL Hometown Ambassador covering the San’in region of Shimane and Tottori.
Air travel connecting the Oki Islands to the mainland began in 1960 with seaplanes. Later, Oki Airport opened, and on July 1, 1966, the “Oki–Izumo Route” was launched! It has continued to serve as a vital link supporting the daily lives and economy of the island’s residents, and this year marks the 60th anniversary of its inaugural flight—a major milestone.
On July 5, a commemorative ceremony and event celebrating the “60th Anniversary of the Oki–Izumo Route” were held at Oki World Geopark Airport. Following last year’s ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Oki Airport’s opening, I was once again deeply honored to serve as the emcee for the event! Surrounded by local residents and many travelers in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, being able to play a direct role in this historic milestone for Oki made it a special and unforgettable day for me as a flight attendant.
The ceremony began with remarks by Mayor Ikeda of Okinoshima Town, who also serves as chairman of the Oki Airport Promotion Council, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by the participants.
The event continued with a performance of the traditional “Shigesu Dance,” and the excitement reached a fever pitch during the “mochi toss”—a favorite among the islanders! With other highlights including a thrilling raffle for all participants and food trucks lined up with delicious treats, the event was filled with smiles from adults and children alike.
――Please tell us about the charms of Oki and your recommended spots.
Okinoshima Town: Shirajima Observation Deck and Shirajima Shrine Remote Worship Site (Torii Gate)
Located at the northernmost tip of Oki Island (Shimogo), the “Shirajima Observation Deck” is one of the island’s premier scenic spots—designated as a National Scenic Spot—and offers sweeping panoramic views of Shirajima Coast and the Sea of Japan. Additionally, if you follow the path leading from the parking lot to the observation deck in the opposite direction, you’ll find the “Shirajima Shrine Remote Worship Site (Torii Gate)” on Nakano Island—a truly mystical place.
Ama Town: AMA Whiskey & Co. “Distillery Drift Mark”
On June 13, the whiskey and gin distillery “Distillery Drift Mark” held its grand opening!
Operated by “AMA Whiskey & Co.,” this facility features a sophisticated glass-walled design that catches the eye from the outside. Inside the distillery, the “Drifter’s Cafe & Bar” is located where visitors can relax while watching the liquor production process through the glass. Tourists and locals alike gather at the same bar to raise a glass and chat cheerfully—truly, this warm and welcoming space has become Ami Town’s new “hub” for community interaction.
Nishinoshima Town: Maten-gai
The “Maten-ga,” a massive 257-meter-high cliff carved out by years of intense sea erosion, is truly a work of art created by nature. In addition, the walking trail leading from Maten-ga to Kokka Beach is an excellent hiking course that has been selected as one of the “Top 100 Walking Trails.” Be sure to enjoy a truly refreshing experience that awakens all five senses as you bask in the pleasant sea breeze!
Chiou Village: Akahage Mountain
Akahage Mountain is the place where you can best experience the dynamic terrain (caldera) of the Oki Islands. When you stand at the observation deck at the summit, a 360-degree panoramic view stretches out before you, unobstructed by anything. Cows graze leisurely, and time flows peacefully.
