The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will begin full-scale implementation of traffic safety measures for rental cars used by foreign visitors in areas surrounding airports.
These measures are in response to the increase in rental car accidents, which has coincided with the recovery in the number of international visitors to Japan. As a first step, traffic safety measures utilizing road markings for right turns, colored pavement, and rubber posts will be implemented on a pilot basis at intersections along major roads leading from New Chitose Airport, Fukuoka Airport, and Naha Airport to major tourist destinations and other areas in the surrounding regions.
Going forward, we will survey and analyze traffic data—including that from the summer months when traveler volume is high—and proceed with the phased implementation on national highways under our direct jurisdiction in the vicinity of the airport, with the goal of completing the process by the end of this fiscal year.
