Summer is now in full swing, and in August, large-scale fireworks displays are held day after day across the country. In this article, we’ll introduce a selection of must-see events from among the fireworks displays taking place in August—perfect for visiting during summer vacation or the Obon holiday.
In the Kanto region and its surrounding areas, the “Makuhari Beach Fireworks Festival 2026” on August 1 is drawing attention, with approximately 24,000 fireworks—one of the largest displays in the country—set to be launched to commemorate the 900th anniversary of Chiba’s founding. Also on August 1, events such as the “Edogawa Ward Fireworks Festival” and the “Itabashi Fireworks Festival” will be held, lighting up the night sky in various locations.
Outside the Kanto region, the “Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display” in Niigata Prefecture—considered one of Japan’s three major fireworks festivals—will be held on August 2 and 3, with live broadcasts and public viewing events also scheduled. In addition, the “Omagari Fireworks” in Akita Prefecture, where pyrotechnicians from across the country compete to showcase their finest skills, will take place on August 29, and the “Lake Suwa Festival Lake Fireworks Display” in Nagano Prefecture—famous for its “Mizukami Grand Star Mine”—will be held on August 15. The schedule is packed with some of the nation’s largest and most prestigious events.
