In response to the earthquake damage in Venezuela, JICA will dispatch the second contingent of the International Emergency Assistance Team (Medical Team) as follows.

Note

1. Disaster Situation

At around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, Japan Standard Time (around 6:00 p.m. on June 24 local time), a series of major earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 7.0 struck approximately 160 km west of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, causing extensive damage primarily in Caracas and La Guaira. According to the Venezuelan government, as of 6:00 a.m. on July 10, the death toll stood at 3,889, with more than 16,740 people injured. Furthermore, according to an assessment by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), approximately 58,870 buildings across the affected region may have collapsed or been damaged.

2. Dispatch of the Japan International Emergency Assistance Team and Medical Teams

In response to a request from the Venezuelan government, JICA has dispatched a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Emergency Assistance Team—Medical Team (42 members). As this team carries out medical assistance activities, and given that the need for medical support in the affected areas remains high, JICA will dispatch a second team as described below to take over the activities of the first team currently on the ground.

① Composed of a team leader, deputy team leader, physician, nurse, pharmacist, medical coordinator, and administrative coordinator.

② Arrangements are currently being made for departures from Haneda and Narita airports on Wednesday, July 15.

③ The assignment period is expected to be about two weeks.
