“Mobile Suica” Experiences Network Outage; Top-Ups and Green Ticket Purchases Affected; No Timeline for Restoration

Posted on July 9, 2026 by Editor in Chief

A network outage has occurred with “Mobile Suica,” a smartphone-based transit IC card service, making it difficult to connect to the service since around 8:00 a.m. on July 1.

According to JR East, various online services that require users to log in via apps—such as those on iPhone, Android, Apple Watch, and Fitbit—have been affected. As of 2:00 p.m., it has been difficult to use these services, including reloading e-money via the app, as well as purchasing new Suica Green Tickets, discounted tickets, and commuter passes. In addition, users continue to face difficulties when attempting to top up their balances using “JRE POINT” credits or redeem them for rewards.

Please note that this will not affect payments using the balance already loaded onto the card, passing through ticket gates, or the use of pre-purchased commuter passes or Suica Green Tickets; these can all be used as usual.

JR East is currently investigating the cause of the malfunction and, at the same time, conducting emergency maintenance to restore service. At this time, there is no estimated timeline for a full restoration, and the company plans to resume services in stages, starting with the functions that can be restored first.

The company says it will provide the latest updates via its official website and official X account.
