Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the earthquake damage in Venezuela have been delivered to the country.
Emergency relief supplies—consisting of plastic sheeting, water purifiers, and plastic water containers that disaster victims can use immediately—arrived in the capital, Caracas, on July 4. At 11:30 a.m. (local time) that same day at Simón Bolívar International Airport, a handover ceremony was held, attended on the Venezuelan side by Vice President Isabel Iturria (in charge of Technology, Environmental Socialism, and Health) and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrea Corallo Faria (in charge of Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania), while the Japanese side was represented by Yasushi Sato, Ambassador of Japan to Venezuela, and Katsuhiko Shino, Deputy Director-General of JICA’s International Emergency Assistance Team Secretariat.
At the handover ceremony, Vice President Iturria expressed his gratitude for Japan’s cooperation and noted that the delivered supplies would be of great help to the disaster victims. In response, Ambassador Sato referred to the support Venezuela provided following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, stating that now is the time for Japan to return the favor. He expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and expressed his hope that this aid would alleviate the suffering of the disaster victims.
The relief supplies provided on this occasion will be distributed to the victims by the government of that country.
