On June 30, Airbnb Japan held a media roundtable with Shintaro Nakagawa, who was appointed CEO of the company in February of this year, in conjunction with “Unite,” an event for the media and host community. Mr. Nakagawa reported on the global business outlook and presented the company’s growth strategy for the Japanese market. He revealed that the company will prioritize “acquiring new users in Japan” moving forward, with the goal of establishing home-sharing as a mainstream option for domestic travel and dispersing tourism demand to regional areas. Additionally, as the first concrete step in this initiative, the company announced a sponsorship agreement with the J.League’s “Gamba Osaka.”
An Evolving Travel Platform: The company also discussed the latest updates to the platform’s features. It continues to evolve from a simple accommodation-matching service into a “platform that supports the entire travel experience,” expanding its offerings beyond traditional “accommodations” to include “experiences” and “services.” Specifically, in addition to airport transfers, car rental arrangements, and pre-purchased food, the company has introduced a “luggage storage service” that allows users to temporarily store their luggage before and after their trip. The service has begun operations in 175 cities worldwide and has already launched in Tokyo. Furthermore, the app’s usability has been improved. A new feature has been implemented that uses AI to instantly analyze and summarize the large volume of past reviews, displaying them in an easy-to-understand format. Mr. Nakagawa stated, “We are working to create an environment where users can plan their trips more comfortably and stress-free.”
