On June 29, DJI JAPAN officially announced the “Osmo Pocket 4P,” the company’s first pocket gimbal camera equipped with dual lenses. Sales have begun through the official online store and authorized retailers, with the Standard Combo priced at 99,000 yen and the Vlog Combo at 113,300 yen. Travel Watch had just published a hands-on review of the “Osmo Pocket 4” in April, but its successor, the “4P,” has already arrived. With the addition of a second lens, the zoom capabilities have significantly improved, and the camera is reportedly even better at handling night scenes and backlit conditions. We had the opportunity to test the actual device during a DJI-hosted press tour in Shenzhen, China, prior to its release. Let’s take a look at how it performs for vlogging at theme parks, outdoors, and while traveling, and summarize its key features in an easy-to-understand way.
With two lenses—a “wide-angle” and a “medium telephoto”—you can capture parades and portraits more beautifully. While previous models featured a single lens per camera, the “Osmo Pocket 4P” features a distinctive design with two lenses arranged vertically on the camera module. The main “wide-angle lens” at the bottom features a newly designed 1-inch CMOS sensor (20mm 35mm equivalent, f/2.0). It’s ideal for easily capturing expansive scenes right in front of you or group selfies. Also newly added is the “60mm medium telephoto lens” (f/1.8) at the top. With this lens, the camera now supports 3x optical zoom and up to 12x digital zoom. For example, you’ll be able to zoom in significantly and capture sharp, blur-free shots of “characters and cast members at theme park shows and parades who are standing a little farther away”—something that was difficult with previous models. Furthermore, this 60mm focal length is said to be the “sweet spot” for portraits, where people’s faces appear natural and beautiful. With a depth of field equivalent to f/6.3, it can make the subject stand out like in a movie while expressing natural depth (background blur).
“17-stop dynamic range” that clearly captures twilight, nightscapes, and backlit scenes. One of the challenges of photography while traveling is capturing scenes with extreme contrasts, such as hotel rooms, fireworks, and illuminations. When shooting with a smartphone or similar device, the view outside the window can be blown out, or conversely, people’s faces can appear completely black. The Osmo Pocket 4P combines a new 1-inch sensor with “LOFIC technology,” which suppresses blown-out highlights caused by strong light, to achieve a wide “17-stop” dynamic range rivaling that of high-end cinema cameras. Even in high-contrast nightscapes, sunsets, and backlit scenes, it reportedly captures both the details of bright backgrounds and shadows while maintaining natural-looking skin tones. It also supports high-definition 4K/240fps slow-motion (up to 8x) even in fast-moving scenes, allowing you to capture moments like the intense motion of amusement park rides, fluttering paper, or falling snow in slow-motion, dramatic footage.
“Active Track 8.0” for peace of mind even while zooming, and an “auxiliary light” that’s handy for nighttime selfies. The tracking feature, which automatically follows your subject, is especially useful when filming active children, pets, or your favorite characters. This model features the further-evolved “Active Track 8.0.” It keeps the subject firmly centered in the frame even during 12x zoom, and even when vlogging while walking, the advanced motorized 3-axis gimbal effectively suppresses camera shake, maintaining consistent focus and skin tone. In terms of operation, like the Osmo Pocket 4, it features a physical zoom button that allows you to quickly switch focal lengths. The device powers on when you rotate the touchscreen or press the record button, letting you start recording immediately. It also supports “4K Live Photo,” which automatically records 1.5-second clips before and after a shot, and can capture high-resolution photos with up to 37 million pixels. Additionally, a magnetic “Osmo Pocket 4 Auxiliary Light” is available, which is useful for selfies in low-light conditions and food photography. It attaches to the gimbal and automatically adjusts brightness during recording.
“103GB of Built-in Storage” and Fast Charging—No Need to Worry About Not Having a microSD Card The Osmo Pocket 4P comes with 103GB of built-in storage so you can start shooting right away, even without a microSD card. This will come in handy in situations like when you “forgot to bring an SD card on your trip” or “ran out of storage space while shooting.” You can export your footage to a PC or smartphone via USB 3.1 wired transfer (up to 800 MB/s) or Wi-Fi 6 wireless transfer (up to 90 MB/s), making it easy to organize and edit your footage after your trip. Weighing 230g, it’s slightly heavier than the Osmo Pocket 4 (190.5g), but it still fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, making it easy to carry in a small bag or pocket. The battery capacity is 1545mAh, the same as the Osmo Pocket 4. It supports fast charging to 80% in just 18 minutes and provides up to 3 hours of recording time. The operating time on a full charge is up to 210 minutes.
