Disney is offering “cooling services” and rest areas to help visitors cope with the extreme heat at its parks. The key concept is “top, middle, bottom.”

On June 16, Tokyo Disney Resort announced heat safety measures for guests ahead of its summer events, which are expected to take place during a period of extreme heat.

Starting July 2, the park will host “Summer Cool Off at Tokyo Disney Resort.” In collaboration with the Center for Environmental Information Science (CEIS), the park will gradually expand its lineup of fun ways to beat the heat.

In our ongoing efforts, we have been designing spaces in the order of “top, middle, and bottom”—which has proven effective in mitigating heat—based on the results of measurements and evaluations of both parks using the WBGT index (heat index).

For example, measures for the “top” include shade provided by tarps to block the sun’s rays and the installation of fans at the top of the queue lines (Q-lines). Measures for the “middle” to improve air circulation include the installation of air conditioners in semi-enclosed areas. Measures for the “bottom” include sprinkling water near Mediterranean Harbor and applying moisture-retaining coatings to the floors in each theme area.

In addition to these measures, we have launched a dedicated website titled “Heat Safety Guide” to help guests manage their health while enjoying their visit, and we are encouraging them to stay cool through interactions with our cast members.

To provide a place to escape the heat, some restaurants will open their doors before regular business hours so guests can cool off. Additionally, as attractions where guests can take a break, Tokyo Disneyland is opening the “Country Bear Theater” and Tokyo DisneySea is opening the “Mermaid Lagoon Theater.” Activities such as coloring and letter-writing, which allow guests to create memories while staying cool, are also being held throughout the day.

In addition, some stores are offering cold water for use with mist fans and cooling towels (a “cooling service”). Furthermore, cold items on restaurant menus are marked with a “cold” symbol to make them easily identifiable at a glance.
