An urban park will open on the site of the former Haneda Airport around spring 2028. Featuring a robot experience facility, a brewery, and sports fields, it aims to become a hub for community interaction.

On June 23, the business group “Haneda Mirai Park Management” held a groundbreaking ceremony for the “(Tentative Name) Haneda Airport Park,” which is currently under development in Zone 1 of the former Haneda Airport site in Ota Ward, Tokyo. The park is scheduled to open around spring 2028.

The project site is located in various areas of Haneda Airport 1-chome and Haneda Airport 2-chome, Ota Ward, Tokyo—a 3-minute walk from Tenkubashi Station—and covers an area of 32,722.45 m². It is just one stop away from Haneda Airport Terminal 3 via the Keikyu and Tokyo Monorail lines, making it a place where visitors can experience the thrill of airplanes up close.

The park’s concept is “HANEDA ‘En’ PARK: Connecting the Past, Present, and Future Through ‘En’.” It is said to embody three aspirations: “En” (bonds) with the local community through Haneda’s urban development; “En” (circle), which encourages visitors to explore the surrounding facilities; and “En” (garden), which grows through interaction among visitors.

Two iconic paths that intersect at a right angle have been laid out within the park. The “Flower Path,” lined with cherry trees that guide visitors toward the center of the park, and the “Path of Time,” which connects the park to the adjacent “Haneda Innovation City” complex and the surrounding area, are intended to enhance connectivity with the entire surrounding area.

At the center of the park is a vast “Lawn Plaza” spanning approximately 7,400 m², and a water feature has been added to the “Play Area” to help combat the summer heat. With wheelchair-accessible, flat pathways and rubber chip mulch used for the flooring around play equipment for children and toddlers, the park aims to create an inclusive environment where everyone can play safely.

The sports field will feature courts for “padel,” a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. Although there are few places to play padel in Tokyo, the style of play—which involves using the surrounding glass walls to keep the rally going—is expected to be a highlight of the park’s goal to “create an environment where people can easily enjoy sports.”

In addition, a multipurpose plaza has been developed where people can enjoy a variety of urban sports, including a skateboard park, a 3×3 basketball court, and a dance area.

Plans also include the establishment of a demonstration area that leverages the technology of small local factories in Ota Ward, a robot experience facility, and a café and brewery inspired by Haneda.

The project group “Haneda Mirai Park Management,” which is spearheading this project—the “Haneda Airport Site Zone 1 Urban Planning Park Project”—consists of six companies: Katabami, the Institute of Contemporary Architecture, Tokyo Soil Research, Landscape Design, Kajima Building Management, and NTT Urban Value Support. The latest information will be posted on the official website of the (tentatively named) Haneda Airport Park.
