JR East to triple the size of QR tickets to prioritize ease of scanning

Posted on June 29, 2026 by Editor in Chief

On June 9, JR East released an image of the “QR Ticket,” which it plans to introduce as a short-distance ticket.

In May 2024, eight railway companies in the Kanto region, including this company, announced plans to phase out magnetic tickets and replace them with QR code-based tickets. At the time, they had stated that the transition would begin “in fiscal year 2026 or later,” but in this latest announcement, they have specified a concrete date: “spring 2027.”

In addition, to make the QR code easier to scan, the size will be increased to 57.5 × 85 mm—just under three times larger than the current magnetic ticket (30 × 57.5 mm).
