28 typhoons above normal expected in 2026; number of typhoons approaching Japan to increase. Super El Niño effects will increase the number of typhoons approaching Japan.

Posted on June 29, 2026 by Editor in Chief

On June 2, Weathernews released its “Typhoon Trends” for 2026. According to its own AI statistical forecast and other data, the number of typhoons this season is expected to be about 28, which is higher than the normal year’s 25.1.

The number of typhoons approaching Japan, including Typhoon No. 6, which is currently approaching western Japan, is expected to be about 14, which is more than normal.

In the first half of the season (June-August), the occurrence of the “El Niño phenomenon” and the “positive Indian Ocean dipole mode phenomenon” causes enhanced convective activity east of the Philippines, creating an environment conducive to the formation of typhoons.

In the second half of the season (September to November), the El Niño phenomenon is expected to develop into a “Super El Niño. As a result, the typhoon development area will shift to the southeast, and typhoons will spend a longer period of time in areas with higher-than-normal sea water temperatures, making it easier for powerful typhoons to approach Japan, especially those on the Pacific Ocean side from south to east Japan.

The report also urges people to pay attention to the development of tropical cyclones before they become typhoons, and to take early countermeasures against them.
