On May 13, Weathernews released its “View of the Beginning and End of the Rainy Season” for 2026.
While Okinawa/Amami entered the rainy season earlier than normal in early May, the rainy season is expected to be generally normal from southern Kyushu to northern Tohoku, with southern Kyushu entering the rainy season in late May, northern Kyushu to eastern Japan in early June, and Hokuriku, southern Tohoku and northern Tohoku in mid-June.
Total rainfall during the period is expected to be near normal in Okinawa/Amami, near normal or above normal from southern Kyushu to northern Tohoku, and peaking in Okinawa/Amami in upper to mid June, southern Kyushu in late June, northern Kyushu, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kinki in late June to early July, Tokai and Kanto Koshin in late June, and Hokuriku, southern Tohoku and northern Tohoku in early July. Hokuriku, southern Tohoku and northern Tohoku in the first half of July.
In June, in particular, the rainy season front becomes more active, and there is a threat of heavy rain and heavy rainfall nationwide, requiring caution and precautions against rising rivers, flooding of houses, and landslides.
The rainy season is expected to end on par with or earlier than normal nationwide, with Okinawa/Amami expected to see the end of the rainy season in late June, followed by southern Kyushu to northern Tohoku in sequence in mid-July.
