JR East will introduce the new “E131 Series” train this fall on the Chuo Main Line, Shinanoi Line, and Shinetsu Main Line.

It will operate across the Chuo Main Line (between Takao Station and Shiojiri Station), Shinonoi Line (between Shiojiri Station and Shinonoi Station), and Shinetsu Main Line (between Shinonoi Station and Nagano Station), with 20 new 3-car trains (60 cars in total).

The existing 211 Series trains will be equipped with onboard security cameras and emergency call systems (4 locations per car) to improve safety, onboard equipment and track equipment monitoring for early detection of malfunctions, and one-man operation with cameras to confirm boarding and alighting for more efficient one-man operation. In addition, seat width will be increased (from approximately 440 mm to 460 mm), LED displays will be installed above the doors to indicate operation status, and barrier-free facilities will be installed.

The exterior of the train will have a silver body with light blue lines, in keeping with the Series 211, and the interior will have long seats with blue tones, “inspired by the blessings of water in the Alps”.
