Koji Inoue’s “Hints for Railway Travel”] If there is a special exception for turning back, you need to pay an additional fare for a stopover.

When you go out of the section on the way and make a round trip I have previously written about the “Fujishiro Line,” a detour separate line on the Hakodate Main Line. Of course, I wrote this after visiting the area and actually riding the line, but the ticket I used at that time was for a trip from Tokyo to Asahikawa. The route was as follows. Tokyo → (Tohoku Main Line) → Omiya → (Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen) → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto → (Hakodate Main Line) → Chomangu → (Muroran Main Line) → Numanohata → (Chitose Line) → Shiroishi → (Hakodate Main Line) → Asahikawa Note that Numanohata is the next station from Tomakomai to Sapporo, where the Muroran Main Line and Chitose Line diverge. In fact, the train did not go directly north from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, but made a stopover in Hakodate to replenish supplies. At that time, the distance between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Hakodate was not included in the ticket section of the ticket that had been prepared. Therefore, we offered to transfer at Hakodate Station through the manned passageway at the ticket gate (or at the fare adjustment counter, if there was one). He then paid the fare between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Hakodate in cash and exited the station. The original ticket was then stamped “Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station stopover fare Hakodate”. This is different from ordinary stopover stamps, which only show the name of the station. The text reads as follows: “The ticket was issued for a stopover at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, and the process of transferring to Hakodate was carried out in place of the stopover at Hakodate. In fact, the train stayed overnight in Sapporo on the way to Hakodate. Therefore, the Shiroishi – Sapporo route would be out of the same section as well. Therefore, I followed the same procedure at Sapporo Station as Hakodate Station and paid the fare between Shiroishi and Sapporo in cash. Again, the original ticket was stamped with the notation “Shiroishi Station fare: Sapporo”. As in the previous example, it can be read as “The train stopped at Shiroishi and overran to Sapporo on behalf of the driver. By stamping “alighting fee” on the ticket, it also indicates that the original ticket was used to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto or Shiroishi.

If tickets are purchased according to the actual route, they will be divided into three sections, which will be more expensive. Therefore, we combined a ticket that covers the entire route from origin to destination with the ability to ride over an overhanging section. The same thing could be done by exiting the train at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto or Shiroishi and re-purchasing a ticket to Hakodate or Sapporo, but this would take extra time. However, this would take extra time, so we had to ask for help from the station staff. When returning along the route that goes out of the way, one must also buy a ticket to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto at Hakodate or to Shiroishi at Sapporo. The reason is that the original ticket is used from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto or Shiroishi onward. In these situations, if you enter with a transportation IC, you will need to exit at the station where you return to the route of the original ticket, so you should buy a paper ticket.
