JAL Furusato Ambassadors and Supporters] Why don’t you live in Hijimachi, Oita Prefecture, in the two regions you’ve always dreamed of?

Posted on June 28, 2026 by Editor in Chief

JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.

We interviewed Ms. Mao Fujimoto, a JAL Furusato Ambassador who is involved in the two-location residence program in Oita.

–What can you tell us about your initiatives?

Hello everyone! This is Mao Fujimoto, JAL Furusato Ambassador for Oita Prefecture.

Hijimachi, Oita Prefecture (Hijimachi) and Japan Airlines (JAL) have launched the “Two-Region Residency Program” for future migration to Hijimachi based on the “Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in Creating Sustainable Human Flows” signed in August 2025.

This project aims to expand the population of future immigrants and permanent residents while addressing the issues and needs of both urban and rural areas.

By starting with a bi-regional residence, rather than suddenly moving completely to a new area, you can experience actual living while getting to know the local people.

–How are you involved in this effort?

This project is an initiative that will also contribute to the creation and expansion of human flow to Hiji Town. We, Japan Airlines, are a part of this effort to promote the attractiveness of the region.

We will also expand our circle of activities with the local community, including fresh exchanges with students.

In this issue, we would like to introduce some of the wonderful spots we found while strolling around Hinode Town.

Visit Hijisaya, a member of the Hinode Town Community Development Cooperation Team, and Mines, a Western-style restaurant. Their juicy hamburgers go great with curry and omelette rice!

This store gathers not only local products, but also fresh foods and souvenirs from all over Kyushu. It is a popular spot for locals as well as tourists!

A vast and beautiful garden surrounded by seasonal flowers and plants. A general store and café are also attached to this healing space. A special annual pass is recommended.

This is a representative spring of Hinode Town. The rain that falls on the Kananagoe Mountains over a long period of time turns into high-quality spring water, which is used for agriculture and daily life of the townspeople.

–What are your future plans and prospects?
