This time we will introduce the “Fried Rice Bento” sold by Sakiyo-ken, which is well known for its shioumai bento. As the name suggests, the main dish is the crispy fried rice, but the company also offers a very similar product called “Yokohama Fried Rice,” so we will introduce it here with some comparisons.
Now, the star of the show is the fried rice, which has a general flavor with no peculiarities that many people would think of in a flash. The taste is stable and delicious, as Saki Yoken has been selling fried rice bento for more than half a century. The texture of the fried rice is typical of fried rice, but I did not find it so difficult to eat even with chopsticks.
Although there is a difference between the company’s “Yokohama Fried Rice” and the “Fried Rice Bento” in the notation of kanji and katakana, the taste and quantity do not seem to be much different. Incidentally, the “Yokohama Fried Rice” comes with a spoon, while the “Fried Rice Bento” comes with chopsticks.
Next are three shiomai, the face of Sakiyoken. In fact, the popular bamboo shoots stew is also included. The “Yokohama Fried Rice” has two siu-mai, so the “Fried Rice Bento” has the advantage in terms of number of siu-mai. The centerpiece of the side dishes is a kamaboko and jellyfish vinegared with vinegar. The mildly seasoned kamaboko has a nice flavor as well as the firm texture of the jellyfish.
Two hearty pieces of fried chicken. They are quite filling. Also, the salt fried noodles hidden under the fried chicken has a firm noodle texture, and compared to the standard flavored fried rice, this one has a slightly peculiar taste. I personally liked it.
The “Fried Rice Bento” has a larger volume of side dishes than the “Yokohama Fried Rice Bento,” including a large fried bean curd, salted fried noodles, and three siu-mai (Chinese dumplings), which is the main difference. The difference can be seen in the size of the package, and although there may be some side dishes you prefer, we recommend the Fried Rice Bento without hesitation if you are looking for a full meal.
*It has been announced that the contents of “Yokohama Fried Rice” will be partially changed from June 1, 2026
