JR Tokai has announced the name and logo for the N700S trains equipped with commercial vehicle inspection equipment.
The name is “Doctor S”. The name uses the “S” that has become an established brand image for the Tokaido Shinkansen, such as “N700S” and “S Work cars. In addition, the name “Doctor” is used to express the fact that this is a vehicle that inherits the role of Doctor Yellow. The “S” in the logo is yellow to visually indicate the inherited role. The logo will be placed on both lead cars and odd-numbered cars, and will be displayed in a total of 20 locations per train.
As announced in October 2025, JR Tokai has been developing technology to conduct inspections on commercial vehicles, which will replace all of the inspection functions of Doctor Yellow and some of the inspection work that is performed by employees on site. The company believes that the high-frequency monitoring of ground facilities will help prevent problems before they occur, improve transportation safety, and reduce the amount of labor required by staff to inspect facilities.
Dr. S will start running as a commercial train in October, and after completing various tests, the inspection equipment is scheduled to be put into operation in January 2027.
In addition, aluminum components used for the retired Doctor Yellow (T4 train) will be horizontally recycled and used for the roof and sides of the Doctor S train body.
