Sprouts Sandwich Shop Since opening in 2014, this cozy sandwich store still draws lines, and some say it is “the best in America! Some say it’s the best in the U.S.”. The charm of Sprouts Sandwich Shop is its simplicity. Fresh vegetables such as locally harvested lettuce, clover sprouts, and tomatoes are combined with homemade pickled onions and sandwiched between lightly toasted bread. That’s the basics, but it’s genuinely delicious and makes you want to go back again and again. This time, we ordered “The DUKE” with roast turkey and bacon ($15) and “The BIG KAHTUNA” with homemade tuna salad ($16.50). The homemade mayonnaise has a wonderful flavor. The generous sandwiches are made in a friendly Hawaiian atmosphere and are packed with the bounty of Hawaii.
Tuna Restaurant Kaimuki, with its many Japanese residents, is dotted with Japanese restaurants. When you open the door and are greeted with a smile from the owner, Goro, you will feel at ease at this sushi restaurant. He moved to Hawaii in 1988, when there were not many Japanese sushi restaurants in Hawaii, and after gaining experience at sushi restaurants and Japanese restaurants, he opened his own sushi restaurant in Kaimuki 27 years ago. Every morning, he goes to the market to buy the best tuna of the day. If you like tuna, try the “Various Tuna” ($35), which allows you to taste Hawaii’s tuna to your heart’s content. You can enjoy a variety of tuna parts such as chutoro (medium fatty tuna), otoro (large fatty tuna), kama no seared, kamatoro shabu shabu, marinated akami (red meat), and chuboroshi (medium fatty tuna) gunkan maki (wrapped in a gunkan) all at the same time. The balance between the thick tuna and rice is another characteristic of Goro’s nigiri. Goro’s warm personality and reasonable prices have made this restaurant a longtime favorite of Japanese-Americans and other locals. The atmosphere as well as the food is a must-see.
