The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has selected the following 12 projects in the areas of environment, carbon neutrality, bioresources, disaster prevention, and infectious diseases for the International Science and Technology Cooperation Program for Addressing Global Issues (SATREPS: Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) for fiscal 2026, based on the selection results by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan Agency for Medical and Health Care Research and Development (AMED). Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) in the areas of environment, carbon neutrality, bioresources, disaster prevention, and infectious diseases. The following 12 projects will be implemented after discussions with the partner countries and agreement on the content of the projects.
SATREPS is a program supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and implemented in collaboration with JICA, JST, and AMED, with the aim of strengthening science and technology diplomacy. The program targets global-scale issues and promotes social implementation of the results of international joint research based on the needs of developing countries. The objectives of this program are to acquire new knowledge and technologies that will lead to the improvement of the level of science and technology, and to solve global issues and create innovations through such knowledge and technologies. In addition, through international joint research under this program, we aim to improve the capacity of developing countries to conduct independent research and development and to solve issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to develop human resources and build a framework for activities in developing countries.
As stated in the Development Cooperation Program Guidelines revised in June 2023, JICA emphasizes “co-creation,” in which various actors bring their strengths together under a common goal and work together to create solutions through dialogue and collaboration, in order to resolve complex and intertwined development issues. From this perspective, we will not only seek new solutions to development issues by strengthening cooperation with universities and research institutions, but also seek to maximize development impact by promoting international brain circulation through exchanges and joint research between students and researchers from developing countries and Japan, and by enhancing the scientific and technological capabilities of both parties.

After the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan concludes an international agreement with the government of the partner country, followed by practical discussions by JICA with the relevant organizations in the partner country, joint research will be initiated on a project-by-project basis. However, there is a possibility that the details of the newly adopted research project may be changed, including cancellation of the project, depending on the details of the working-level discussions with the partner country and the situation in the partner country, etc. Therefore, at this time, the research projects are adopted on a “conditional” basis.
The order of the projects in the area is in alphabetical order of the principal investigator’s name.
