What kind of camera? A quick look at the evolution of the sensor and lens This is the successor to the “Osmo Pocket 3” and is equipped with a newly developed 1-inch CMOS sensor & 14-stop dynamic range. Recording specifications newly support 4K/240fps, enabling clearer images to be recorded even in dark places or when shooting in slow motion (the previous model could record up to 4K/120fps). The lens specifications remain unchanged. 20mm focal length (35mm equivalent), f/2.0 single focal length wide-angle lens with a minimum focusing distance of 20cm; a wide-angle lens that can be attached with a magnet is available as an option. The focal length is 15mm (35mm equivalent) and is included with the Creator Combo described below, or can be purchased separately. Comparing still images with and without the wide-angle lens, we found that the images with the wide-angle lens were slightly more distorted than those taken with a smartphone, but we thought it would be a good idea to enjoy the difference as a realistic image.
What are the shooting modes? Color mode is now Normal 10bit/D-Log 10bit Six shooting modes are available: panorama, photo, movie, low light, slow motion, and hyperlapse. Except for low-light and slow motion, portrait orientation is also supported. Color mode has been changed from HLG/D-Log M to Normal 10bit/D-Log 10bit. We tried shooting a walk through the city and a view looking down from the office building to the ground (hyperlapse), and found that the normal 10-bit mode produced natural-looking colors even in the raw data. Other features include the Film Tone function, which can change the overall mood of the screen, and the Beautiful Skin function, which can adjust the smoothness and brightness of the skin. Manual adjustment of shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, and white balance (manual setting) is possible, and the microphone channel and directivity can be changed. The tracking function has evolved from ActiveTrack 6.0 to ActiveTrack 7.0. The intelligent tracking performance allows the camera to always focus on the subject and capture it within the frame, even in crowded places.
Built-in storage. Use it as soon as you buy it, and don’t be afraid of running out of memory card space. The Osmo Pocket 4 has a new 107GB of built-in storage. It can be used immediately after purchase, even when no memory card is inserted (no free space), and the captured images can be transferred to a PC (up to 800MB/s) or smartphone. When I copied a 20-second hyperlapse (167MB) to a PC as a test, the transfer was completed immediately without any waiting time.
How long will the built-in battery last on a charge? What is the size of the main unit? The built-in battery has a capacity of 1545 mAh, up from 1300 mAh in the previous model. With the addition of the built-in storage, the size and weight of the main unit has increased, but it is still the same size or slightly lighter than an iPhone and just barely fits vertically in the palm of the hand. With a gimbal clamp to protect sensitive parts and a carrying pouch or protective cover, it could be carried in a “pocket,” as the product name suggests, or it could fit in a shoulder bag or mini bag as long as it is as wide as a long wallet. Osmo Pocket 4 Osmo Pocket 3 Body size (L x W x H) 144.2 x 44.4 x 33.5mm 139.7 x 42.2 x 33.5mm Weight 190.5g 179g Battery capacity 1545mAh 1300mAh When fully charged, the camera can shoot 1080p/24fps video up to Can shoot for up to 240 minutes. The battery supports quick charging, charging from 0% to 80% in 18 minutes, and from that state, the camera can shoot for up to 3 hours. From my experience, it seems to be fine on its own for a walk around the neighborhood, but if it is used for vlogging on trips or outings, I felt that the “battery handle,” an accessory that can easily increase the capacity, is indispensable. As a specific example of actual half-day use from a fully charged state, I shot less than 20 videos of 30 seconds to 1 minute and several photos, connected and recorded an external microphone (DJI Mic 3) 3 times for a total of about 5 minutes, checked the contents of each shot on the monitor every few shots with the screen brightness on medium, and connected to a smartphone app for about 1 hour. Battery life was 29% when put to sleep.
Three different sets to choose from, each recommended for what kind of person? When purchasing the Osmo Pocket 4, you need to consider the peripherals (accessories) you need and choose from the three so-called “pine, bamboo, and plum” patterns. If you are interested in vlogging and want a complete set from the start, including a mini tripod, auxiliary light, and external microphone, we recommend the “Creator Combo,” while we recommend the “Standard Combo” for those who just want to try shooting in various scenes, and the “Essential Combo” for those who do not carry other items with them and want to consider accessories individually. For those who do not want to carry it with other luggage and want to consider each accessory separately, we recommend the “Essential Combo.
