World’s First Demonstration Experiment Using Smartphones and Facial Recognition to Transfer Between International Flights, Conducted by JAL and TIAT

Posted on April 28, 2026 by Editor in Chief

JAL and Tokyo International Airport Terminal conducted the world’s first demonstration test of boarding and connecting flights using only facial recognition.

If you link your boarding pass, passport, or other digital credentials and facial information to a mobile wallet application on your smartphone, this digital identity will be shared with the airport system. This system allows passengers to pass through various gates at the airport using only facial recognition.

This verification was conducted on a route from Haneda Airport to London via Hong Kong. Utilizing facilities such as “Face Express” at Haneda Airport and “Flight Token” at Hong Kong International Airport, we confirmed that passengers could pass smoothly through the transit security gate and boarding gate using facial recognition based on the information provided in advance.

Through the experiment, the company has demonstrated identity authentication and interoperability using three different types of mobile wallets, as well as support for two types of biometric authentication systems: one-to-one and one-to-many authentication, which differ from airport to airport. This is the world’s first case in which transfer procedures were conducted using digital identities on smartphones.

The two companies will continue to use the knowledge gained from this experiment to promote the transformation of airline services to provide a seamless travel experience that eliminates the need to present passports and boarding passes.
