On April 24, the House of Councillors passed a bill to partially amend the Passport Law (Cabinet Law No. 21) at a plenary session.
The revised passport law lowers the passport application fee, reducing it by 7,000 yen from the current 16,300 yen for a 10-year passport to 9,300 yen (for over the counter applications).
In addition, the 5-year passports for those over 18 years old will be abolished and only those under 18 years old will be covered, and the current fees of 11,300 yen (for those 12-18 years old) and 6,300 yen (for those under 12 years old) will be unified at 4,800 yen (for applications over the counter).
The new fees will apply to applications filed on or after July 1.
