Ueno Zoo to build a “new ride” connecting the West Garden to the East Garden, aiming to begin service at the end of FY2029.

Posted on April 5, 2026 by Editor in Chief

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has announced that it will develop a “new vehicle” for transportation within the Ueno Zoological Gardens (9-83 Ueno Park, Taito-ku, Tokyo), replacing the “Ueno Zoo Monorail” that was in operation until December 2023, in order to improve circulation and ensure safe and comfortable transportation within the zoo.

The new ride will consist of three cars (approximately 21 meters) with a capacity of 60 passengers. The train will connect the West Garden Station Building to the East Garden Station Building, a distance of approximately 340 meters, and will be designed with large windows inside the car to provide a view of the park. The ride will take approximately 3.5 minutes.

They aim to start construction in FY2026 and begin using the system together with the new station building at the end of FY2029. In addition, the name of the ride will be publicly solicited in the future.
