Tobu Railway to Introduce New Series 1000 Trains Compatible with Automatic Operation in 2027. Equipped with “MIMAMONI,” a device that enables constant measurement.

Posted on April 5, 2026 by Editor in Chief

Tobu Railway will successively introduce 1000 Series trains (6 trains, 12 cars) as new trains for the Kameido and Daishi Lines starting in 2027, and will begin full-scale verification of automatic operation on the Daishi Line in 2028 or later.

The concept of the train is “SMART & GATEWAY – Entrance to the Future. Based on the long-term management vision “Evolving Society and Lines through Challenge and Cooperative Creation,” the concept expresses the desire to challenge the near-future goal of automated driving.

The exterior is based on the traditional color “Senzai Midori” and adopts a hexagonal motif, which is considered the most stable shape in nature. The exterior design is based on the traditional color “senzai green,” and features a hexagonal motif, the most stable shape in nature, to express the car’s “safe and comfortable ride” with safety as the top priority, while pursuing advanced features.

The interior was finished in a color palette of paired left, right, and top and bottom colors to create an “image of light rushing toward the future.

In terms of functionality, based on the results of past verifications, the company has installed security equipment for automatic operation and various sensors for detecting obstacles and derailments. Some trains are equipped with MIMAMONI, a facility monitoring system, which can constantly monitor the condition of the facilities even during commercial operation.

In addition, the latest energy-saving equipment (full SiC VVVF controller, high-efficiency IM, LED lighting) will be installed to reduce environmental impact while providing a comfortable interior space.

The details of the verification of automatic operation on the Tobu Daishi Line (to be started after 2028) will be announced at a later date.
