On April 2, NAA (Narita International Airport) President Naoki Fujii met with Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Yasushi Kaneko to report on the progress of Narita Airport’s functional enhancements.
Runway B will be extended from the current 2,500m to 3,500m, and Runway C will be newly constructed at 3,500m on the southeast side as seen from the terminal, both of which will begin full-scale construction in May 2025. As a result, the annual number of departures and arrivals is expected to increase from the current 300,000 to 500,000, with the initial plan calling for the start of service on March 31, 2029.
According to NAA, of the 1,099 hectares of land required for the site, 89.7% had been secured as of the end of March, including 99.5% for Runway B and 88.7% for Runway C.
Since the land for the extended portion of the B runway has been secured, the extended portion of the B runway will be put into service first, aiming for the end of FY2029.
On the other hand, the company has not indicated any prospects for the C runway at this time, and stated that “while we will continue our efforts toward voluntary acquisition, we believe that the use of the eminent domain system will be necessary to ensure the eventual acquisition of the land for the site.
