THE LINKPILLAR2″ is a large complex building with office floors, commercial facilities, a clinic, and a fitness center. MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives” is an experimental museum that transcends genres ranging from tradition to manga, music to space. The museum will offer encounters with new knowledge through exhibitions, live performances, and traditional Japanese experiences related to “seasonal themes” set twice a year.

JR East will open the new “THE LINKPILLAR2” and “MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives” on March 28 in TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY, a new district adjacent to Takanawa Gateway Station.

Creating and Connecting Cultures “MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives

The museum, with three floors underground, six floors above ground, and a rooftop, has a spiral-shaped exterior covered with greenery, and exhibition spaces include BOX 1500, a huge space of approximately 1500 m2, BOX 1000, the latest theater space of approximately 1000 m2, BOX 300, a compact space of approximately 300 m2, and Tatami, a 100-mat tatami space. Tatami, a 100 tatami mat space.

The museum has a moon-viewing terrace, a footbath terrace, a shrine, a vegetable garden, and a café and restaurant inside the building, making it possible to enjoy a full day just inside the facility. The “MoN” in MoN Takanawa, the name of the museum, is an acronym for Museum of Narratives, and has two meanings: a “gate” to a new world where you can meet new people and a “question” to think about and create the future.

Kundo Koyama was the overall producer. The artistic director is Mahoro Uchida, and the building exterior was designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the “Gate of Future Culture” in the entrance hall. This is a limited edition exhibit during the “MoN Festival,” a commemorative event to be held from the day of the museum’s opening until April 17. Under the theme of “Culture we want to connect to the next 100 years,” 32 cultural creators active in various fields have selected items and messages to be displayed.

From its opening until September, “MANGALOGUE: The Firebird” will be held in BOX 1000, the newest theater space, and “GURU-GURU Exhibition: The Story of Evolving Humanity” will be held in BOX 1500, the museum’s largest space.

There are three dining facilities: the take-out style cafe “MoN Park Cafe by Spiral” on the first floor, the cafe-restaurant “MoN Kitchen by Spiral” on the third floor, and the rooftop restaurant “MoN Garden Restaurant “LAUBE” on the roof top, which mainly features seasonal ingredients from various regions along JR East lines. Restaurant “LAUBE” is located on the rooftop, offering a bright and open atmosphere for dining.

The museum is filled with railway-related artifacts, such as railroad forests set up along the railroad line for safety, and pine piles driven into the sea to solidify the ground when the railway line was constructed by building an embankment when the area was once an ocean.

These are the remains of the railroad line between Shinbashi and Yokohama, which opened here in Takanawa 150 years ago, and will be passed down to the future. The remains of the Takanawa embankment, which was built to install the tracks over the sea, is currently under construction and will be opened to the public in 2028, and can be viewed from MoN Takanawa.
