Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for damage caused by Cyclone Gezani in the Republic of Madagascar have been delivered to the country.

Emergency relief supplies for Madagascar arrived in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, between February 24 and 26, and were delivered at 15:00 local time on February 27 at the National Disaster Risk Management Center (BNGRC). The ceremony was attended by the Japanese Ambassador to Madagascar, Mr. Hitotsugu Tojima, and JICA Madagascar Office Director, Mr. Kosuke Odawara, from the Japanese side.

At the handover ceremony, Minister Rakotnandrasana expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s prompt assistance, with whom he has a longstanding friendship, and stated that the goods would be promptly delivered to homes and hospitals in the severely damaged Toamasina area in cooperation with related organizations.

In response, Ambassador Tojima expressed solidarity with the victims and said that Japan would continue to cooperate with Madagascar as a “solid partner of Madagascar”.

Mr. Odawara expressed his heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with all those affected by the cyclone, and also referred to the multiple JICA cooperative projects being developed in the Toamasina region, and expressed his determination that Japan and Madagascar would continue to “face difficulties together, recover together, and move forward together”.

The relief supplies provided this time will be delivered to the victims by the government of the country.
