The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Republic of Madagascar on March 4 in Antananarivo, the capital of the country, for the “Electricity Access Improvement Project in Toamasina City”. The G/A was signed by Mr. Ramiarison Herrinzatubu Eme, Minister of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Madagascar, and Mr. Kosuke Odawara, Director of JICA Madagascar Office.

Signing Ceremony

This project aims to significantly reduce power outages and cope with future increases in electricity demand in Toamasina, a major international logistics hub in Madagascar, by upgrading the city’s aging power infrastructure. The stabilization of power supply achieved through this project will support the smooth distribution of goods between the capital city of Antananarivo and Toamasina Port, the largest international port in the country, and the strengthening of the power infrastructure will contribute to improving the city’s resilience against climate disasters. This project will also contribute to the “Indian Ocean-Africa Economic Zone Initiative,” which aims to encourage the development of an African economic zone using the Indian Ocean as a nodal point, and furthermore, to create a virtuous economic circle with Japan.
