JR East introduces Japan’s first drone for inspections during transportation disruptions. Deployed from docks along the Yamanote Line to shorten restoration time.

Posted on March 11, 2026 by Editor in Chief

JR East will introduce drones and AI-based image analysis for inspections when transportation disruptions occur, and begin operating them on the Yamanote Line in FY2026.

Currently, the identification of faulty parts and vehicles relies on reports from crew members, etc. AI analysis of images captured by surveillance cameras will be introduced here. This will not only speed up identification, but also help prevent damage from spreading. Once the vehicle has been identified, a drone will be dispatched to the site prior to the dispatch of personnel to shorten the time required to inspect and determine the restoration method.

To introduce the system, pantograph monitoring cameras will be installed on the overhead wire poles and drone docks will be installed along the line. The images taken by the surveillance cameras will be narrowed down by AI to only those involving the pantographs, and the presence or absence of damage will be determined. The drones are equipped with a system to prevent collisions and deviation from the site, and tests conducted at Shimbashi Station confirmed that they can be operated without any problems.

The company plans to consider introducing the system on other lines, both Shinkansen and conventional, and has identified the Chuo Line between Tokyo Station and Shinjuku Station as a specific section to be considered.
