Tama Urban Monorail announced on November 27 that it has obtained approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for an urban planning project and will begin work on the extension project. The project is scheduled to run until 2034, and seven stations will be newly constructed within the section.

The project is to extend the Tama Urban Monorail from Kamikitadai Station to JR Hakonegasaki Station. A special road (dedicated urban monorail road) will be constructed along a 7 km section from Kamikitadai 1-chome, Higashiyamato City to Aza Sayama, Hakonegasaki, Mizuho Town, Nishitama County.

The total construction cost is approximately 129 billion yen. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will provide the “infrastructure” portion of the structure, such as pillars, girders, and station buildings, for 90.4 billion yen, while Tama Urban Monorail will provide the “external infrastructure,” such as rolling stock, train lines, and ticket vending machines, which are necessary for operation and management.

The effects of the project include improved accessibility in the Tama region and the strengthening of the public transportation network in the Tama region by connecting JR Hakonegasaki Station to Tama Center Station. This project promotes the “2050 Tokyo Strategy” and falls under “Strategy 18: Infrastructure and Transportation ‘Enhance and strengthen the public transportation network that supports urban activities and the lives of Tokyo residents.
