JAL Hometown Ambassadors and Supporters] Hula Dancing in the Nature of Amami, Feeling the Hula with the Five Senses

Posted on February 14, 2026 by Editor in Chief

Lei making Vivid flowers and greenery blooming in and around the studio garden. As the hands cut the flowers one by one with scissors and carefully thread them onto the strings, the mind naturally becomes still and focused. The softness and fragrance of the flowers in the palm of your hand, and the weight of nature’s blessings in the lightness of the finished lei around your neck, fill your heart with contentment.

Hula Experience On the way to the beach, the instructor, Ms. Izumi, will teach us the meaning of plants and flowers and how to use leis. As you walk along the beach, your eyes naturally wander to individual plants and flowers that you would not normally notice, and you feel the richness of the landscape as you go. When they reach the beach, they dance the hula with their shoulders aligned with the horizon, feeling the waves, the wind, the sun, and the scent of the flowers in front of them. Each move has a meaning, conveying the scenery before you, the movement of your heart, and the culture of Hawaii. I spent a peaceful and pleasant time as my senses were sharpened and my body and nature became one. –What are your thoughts? Izumi says, “I want people to feel the power of nature, touch it, be embraced by it, and let themselves be relaxed. By doing so, you can realize your true self. In Amami, she says, there is a place where you can honestly receive such sensations. In fact, I felt my heart slowly relax as I touched the flowers and greenery and felt the sound of the waves, the sun, and the wind. Even on an island that is said to have “nothing,” there are flowers and plants, and time to experience their bounty. I felt the warmth of nature and the cycle of life in the palm of my hand as I weaved the lei. In such moments, your heart may be filled with a sense of contentment. –Please give a message to travelers. Please spend some time on the sandy beaches of Amami, surrounded by the sound of the waves, the scent of the sea, and the surrounding greenery and flowers. Just by being aware of the abundant nature you see, you can relax and forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Spending time in nature will become a special part of your trip.
