Hints for Railway Travel” by Takashi Inoue] Use of laptop computers on board, facilities and considerations for each train.

Be careful not to peek. However, since the train car is a “public space,” you never know who or what is watching you. I often see people looking at work documents or accessing the company’s business system on the Shinkansen, and I have to wonder what they are doing from the standpoint of compliance and security. I often write manuscripts in the car, but the severity of such access is different from that of accessing internal business systems. It is best to limit the contents to those that would not have a significant impact on the eyes of a third party, such as checking publicly available documents. If this is a must, one can use facilities such as the “S Work P seats” on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines, which have a partition between the A and C seats of a three-seater, making it difficult to peek through the partition. Another option, although not a complete solution, is to install a peep-proof filter on the screen. However, it should be noted that this only restricts the area that can be seen, but does not create a situation where others cannot see at all.

Using a keyboard instead of a pointing device With a desktop PC, using a mouse or trackball as a pointing device is the usual practice, but the situation is different when a notebook PC is taken out of the office. In a train car (or even in an airplane), space is limited in width, so there is no room for a mouse next to the notebook PC. If the seat next to you on the right side is available, you can borrow the table there, but it is not the most appropriate way. Of course, this is why notebook PCs have a touchpad, but how does it compare to a mouse? Of course, there are personal differences and differences in personal preferences, but I wonder if touchpad operation is at a level where it can be welcomed with open arms. If so, we would prefer to use the keys as much as possible, which is difficult to do with a Web-based application, but with Word and Excel, there are many situations in which it is possible to use the keys instead of relying on a pointing device. This is true because I once wrote a book on Excel shortcut keys. Also, you can operate menus with a combination of the [Alt] key, letter keys, and directional keys. The problem is that one day, the specifications may suddenly change due to an update, and the access keys that you have memorized may be completely changed. The same is true in many situations, not only on the train, but also at home or in the office, where key operation is quicker and easier. Therefore, there must be some persuasive power in saying that it is better to learn key operation from the viewpoint of work efficiency.

The subject of power outlets was discussed in the fourth article of this series, but we will discuss it again while trying not to duplicate it in the flow of this article. The power outlets installed in cars are, of course, 100 VAC, and the frequency may be 50 Hz or 60 Hz, depending on the car, but the difference in frequency is not a problem when used to power a laptop computer or smartphone. The maximum capacity is 2 amps, or 200 watts per outlet. This is not a concern when connecting a single notebook PC or smartphone, but if multiple devices are connected by using a table tap or other means to branch out, you may want to be concerned about exceeding the capacity.
