Signing of Minutes of Discussion on Technical Cooperation Project for Malaysia: Contributing to Sustainable Oil Palm Plantation Management and Enhancing Biomass Utilization for Establishing a Circular Economy | News & PR

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed the Record of Discussions (R/D) with the National Institute of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM) on January 27, in Selangor, Malaysia, on the technical cooperation project “Enhancing Biomass Utilization for Sustainable Oil Palm Plantation Management and Establishing Circular Economy. (Record of Discussions: R/D) on the technical cooperation project “Enhancing Biomass Utilization for Sustainable Oil Palm Plantation Management and Establishment of Circular Economy”. The signature was exchanged between Prof. Raha Abdul Rahim, CEO of NIBM, and Ms. Minako Sugawara, Director of JICA Malaysia Office.

This project will support the advancement of oil palm biomass utilization and the promotion of a recycling-oriented bioeconomy in Malaysia by utilizing Japan’s knowledge in the fields of biotechnology and the environment, The project will contribute to the market expansion of the biotechnology industry in Japan and its overseas expansion by linking the technology developed in the project to technological demonstration through social implementation in cooperation with private companies.

Business Objectives

This project aims to disseminate the research results of the SATREPS project “Development of High Value-Added Technology for Old Oil Palm Trees for Sustainable Land Use and Regeneration of Oil Palm Plantations” in Malaysia, and to conduct research and development on new oil palm biomass utilization. The project aims to disseminate the research results of the “Development of high value-added technology for old oil palm trees for sustainable use and regeneration of oil palm plantations. The technology developed in this project will be demonstrated through social implementation in cooperation with private companies, and the results will be proposed to the Malaysian government and the palm oil industry to develop and disseminate biotechnological methods utilizing oil palm biomass resources for the realization of a recycling-based bioeconomy. Through these efforts, the project is expected to contribute to the enhancement of biomass resource utilization for sustainable management of oil palm plantations.
