There are approximately 1.3 billion people with disabilities worldwide (about 16% of the world’s population), 80% of whom live in low- and middle-income countries. The employment rate of persons with disabilities remains low, and the gap with non-disabled persons has hardly narrowed in the past decade.
Since the 2000s, JICA has been implementing cooperation for inclusive employment based on the social model of disability, and conducted a “Review Study of Cooperation Projects in this Field” from December 2024 to November 2025, in order to confirm the progress of results and the current situation in the target countries, identify issues and lessons learned from the approaches adopted, and make recommendations for future projects. The “Review Study of Projects for Employment of Persons with Disabilities” was conducted from December 2024 to November 2025, with the aim of confirming the progress of results and the current situation in the target countries, identifying challenges and lessons learned from the approaches adopted, and compiling recommendations for the formation of future projects and cooperation.
We would like to take this opportunity to present the results of the survey to all those who have contributed to this study and to those who are interested in the field of disability and development. We look forward to your participation.
