NHK will broadcast the documentary program “Shin Project X – Chosenshatachi -” titled “A Half Century’s Wish: The Hokuriku Shinkansen – Piercing the Iiyama Tunnel” on January 24, 2012 (78-minute extended edition). The program will start at 19:30.
The 22-km long Iiyama Tunnel, located between Iiyama and Joetsu Myoko Stations, which opened in 2015, is featured. The story introduces the process leading up to the opening of the tunnel, which faced numerous difficulties such as faults, high-pressure water springs, and flammable gases, as well as a large-scale collapse.
The program features Junichi Yoda, councilor and general manager of the Corporate Planning Department, and Jun Okazaki, former vice president of the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, which is responsible for the construction of the project. The Hokkaido Shinkansen Construction Bureau is also cooperating in the filming.
